The Delaware Environmental Navigator - DEN - is a dynamic database of the Delaware Department of Natural resources and Environmental Control – DNREC – that brings together core environmental information into one place where it is easily accessible to those within DNREC and the public. This system allows users to easily answer questions and concerns about the environment such as potential sources of contamination, violations, water quality monitoring points and results or wetland locations to name a few.
DEN will allow the public to view all facility information, violations, enforcement actions and monitoring results pertaining to Air Quality, Waste Water, Water Supply, Hazardous Waste, Solid Waste, Contaminated Site Cleanup, Underground Tanks and Vapor Recovery. Work is in progress to integrate Septic Permits, Wetlands, Above Ground Tanks, Hazardous Waste Annual Reports, Ambient Water Monitoring Data and Corrective Action Sites information into the DEN. These will be completed by June 2006. Further work is needed to integrate Toxic Release Inventory, and Non Hazardous Waste Sites into DEN. These are expected to be completed by December 2006.
DEN also contains limited information on Nature Preserve, Open Space, Parks, Playgrounds, and Wildlife Areas. More information on these and other Natural Resource programs are expected to be integrated into DEN by September 2006.
Purpose of DEN
The purpose of DEN is to allow both Departmental and public users easy access to answer questions such as:
· Has DNREC had any current or past dealings with a piece of property?
· What environmental permits are held by an industrial facility?
· Has DNREC conducted any benthic surveys on my favorite stream?
· Are there any environmental concerns with a piece of property being considered for acquisition for a park expansion?
· Where are the potential sources of contamination in my watershed?
· Are there any wetlands mapped on a property being considered for development?
· Have there been any violations of any permits at a facility?
· Where are ambient surface water monitoring points on a stream and what are the results of that monitoring?
· Where has DNREC collected sediment samples that have been analyzed for PCBs?
Some of these questions can be answered now; others will be answered as DEN nears completion during the next two years.
